New SSC syllabus is now on the stands
Mumbai February 27 : Copies of the ‘new and improved’ SSC syllabus, which are meant to provide schools with an outline of the curriculum, have hit the stands. While schools are upbeat at having received a guiding framework, some principals are still apprehensive because the new textbooks have not yet arrived.
“The textbooks will be out only by May,’’ said Vasant Kalpande, chairman of the SSC board.
He added that the Marathi and English textbooks had been sent for printing, while the remaining textbooks for Classes IX and X will be sent for printing in March.
Among the new subjects will be Personality Development which explores topics like stress management, human rights and fighting corruption. Besides, topics such as globalisation have been added to the history syllabus, which also includes the study of global terrorism and more world history than in earlier texts.
Principals of SSC schools said the new subjects and topics were already a part of the ICSE and CBSE syllabus. Hence teachers, who were worried about dealing with new subjects in the next academic year could always refer to books from the other boards, they said.
Kalpande said along with the new textbooks, there will be guidebooks available for teachers on how to teach personality development; a subject that does not have a textbook.
The new syllabus will come into effect for Classes IX and XI in 2006 and Classes X and XII in 2007. Copies of the syllabus have been sent to all schools.
