ANNUAL REPORT: 2007-2008
Reverend President of the day, Fr Charles Noronha, esteemed Chief Guest, Dr M. Mohan Alva, Dignitaries on the dais,
honourable Guests, dear Parents and Guardians, and my dear Students,
I am happy to sing the praises of the Students and Staff of Pompei College for their achievements during the academic year
2007 -2008: The year has been hectic in activities and the college has been bubbling with enthusiasm in its academic as well
as co-curricular endeavours.
STAFF AND STUDENTS:
The year began with the addition of the new course, B. B. M. in addition to the existing B. A. and B. Com. B B M is, indeed,
a great boon to the students of the locality. The total student-strength has risen to 451 with 150 men and 301 lady
students. We have 13 Full Time Teaching Staff and 12 Non-Teaching Staff approved by the Department of Collegiate Education.
The Management Staff include 2 Full Time and 6 Part Time Teachers, 1 Computer Instructor and I Clerk. Mr P. Janardhanan has
joined the Department of Political Science as H. O. D. Ms Jyothi B. R. Kamath and Ms Bhavya have joined us as Full Time
Commerce and Management Teachers. We welcome them along with Prof. Joseph Chooracken, Mrs Shilpa Naik, Mrs Sudharani, Mrs
Meena Kumari, Ms Padmavathi, Ms Geetha Karanth, Mrs Vivilia Quadros and Mrs Silvia Pais. We thank Ms
Chandrakala for her efficient services to the Department of Political Science. We are grateful to our Guest Lecturers Mrs
Gretta D’Souza, Mr Roque Nicholas Noronha and Mrs Anupama Saldanha for their service to the College.
RESULTS:
The majority of our students did do well in the April 2007 University Examinations: The following were the results recorded
by the respective Classes:
Final Year B. A. : 98.21%
Final Year B. Com : 80.26%
II Year B. A. : 59.47%
II Year B. Com. : 67.10%
I Year B. A. : 85.18%
I Year B. Com. : 85.50%.
We are, indeed, happy with the performance of the First and Final Year Students. We hope the others too will come up to our
expectations in the subsequent examinations. During the next academic year, all the Classes will be under the Semester
Scheme.
CAMPUS SELECTION:
The multi-national Genpact selected and absored Ms Sushma Shetty of B. A. and Ms Deborah D’Souza of B. Com. into their
Company. Our hearty congratulations to both of them who are the first fruits of Pompei selected by the MNCs. During the
current year, J P Morgan MNC selected, in the first round, 13 students from
B. Com. and 8 students from B. A. for job-placement. Our congratulations to the selected candidates. Many other multi-
nationals are expected to come to Pompei to select our students for lucrative jobs. We are happy that Pompei is looked up to
as a source of qualified and competent personnel for the multi-nationals.
INNOVATIVE COURSES:
The Staff had a day’s Seminar on Stress Management by Mr Roque Noronha as part of the in-service-training. The Final Year B.
A. and B. Com. were given intensive two-week courses on Communicative English by Mrs Anupama Saldanha and Mr Roque Noronha
respectively. The Final Year B. A. students were also given an intensive course in Basic Accountancy by Mrs Gretta D’Souza.
34 students of Final B. Com. are undergoing the Industrial Accountant Course conducted by the Institute of Computer
Accountants, Udupi. Regular Computer Courses are offered by our Computer Centre to all the interested students, namely, the
E-Office, E-Finance and the D T P. We thank Mrs Vivilia Quadros for organizing the Courses.
STUDENTS’ WELFARE COUNCIL:
Constituted with two elected representatives each from each Class, the Students’ Welfare Council of the college cooperates
actively in the smooth conduct of the various activities of the college under the guidance of Prof. Purushotham, the
Students’ Welfare Officer. The elected Class Representatives are:

The Council took active part in the Founder’s Day, Pompei Day, Sports Day and other activities of the college. The inter-
class variety entertainment presented by the various Classes was well-enjoyed by one and all. The Council celebrated the
Teachers’ Day and Principal’s Birthday in a grand manner. I congratulate the Students’ Council and all the students for
their willing cooperation and enthusiastic participation in the various programmes.
THE LIBRARY:
Our Library is a veritable store-house of knowledge, equipped not only with books but also internet. We have 13,294 books
costing over Rs 8,25,000/= in the library. During the current year, we have added 993 volumes. 611 books were purchased
under the U G C X Plan worth Rs 74,505/=. We subscribe to 49 Journals/ Periodicals and 9 Daily Newspapers. The Library has
Book Bank, Reprography, Intercom and Internet facilities and is being computerized. We congratulate Mr Michael Pinto
and his associates for maintaining the Library efficiently.
SPORTS & GAMES:
Our college provides ample opportunities to our students for Outdoor and Indoor Games as well as Sports. Raveesha and
Sujatha Poojary were the Sports Secretaries for the year. The Leaders of the four Houses were:

Our College Teams participated in the Mangalore University Inter-collegiate Competitions in Swimming, Chess, Table Tennis,
Volley Ball, Weight-Lifting and Athletics. The Annual Sports Meet was held in a dignified manner on 18.12.2007.
It was inaugurated by Mr Vincent D’Costa, Administrative Officer, Bharath Matha Education Trust, Kinnigoly and concluded by
Rev. Fr Jerome D’Souza, Principal, Pompei P U College, Aikala. Raveesha, III B. A. and Joyline Mendonca, II B. A. emerged as
Individual Champions, with Joyline Mendonca creating a new record in High Jump. In the Mangalore University Inter-collegiate
Athletic Meet, Joyline Mendonca secured the II Place in 400 Mts Hurdles and Heptathlon. Our hearty congratulations to Joyline
and all our sportspersons.
We congratulate Mr James Oliver, our dynamic Physical Education Director, for enthusing and training our sports-persons. His
organization of the Sports Meet was indeed excellent.
N. C. C.:
The National Cadet Corps Naval Wing functions efficiently under the direction of Sub Lieutenant Purushotham K. V. and the
leadership of Cadet Captain Fakruddin Nasir, III B. Com., P/O Cadets Guruprasad, III B. Com., Manjunatha, III B. A. and
Jyothi Shetty, III B. Com.
For the first time, 5 of our Cadets, namely, Vishalakshi, III B. A., Mranali Shetty,
I B. Com., Royston D’Souza, II B. Com., Dishanth Shetty, I B. Com. and Praveen S. Suvarna, I B. Com. attended the Nav Sainik
Camp at Vishakapatnam in October
2007. Besides, A/C Mranali Shetty and L/C Vishalakshi secured the First Places in
the All India Level Boat Pulling Competition and secured Gold Medals. Our hearty congratulations to all of them.
We also congratulate L/C Lawrence C. Lobo, II B. Com. for securing the First Place in the State Level Rock Climbing
Competition held in Mangalore on 2.12.2007. L/C Rajesh Shettigar participated in the NSC I. II & III Phases in Udyavar. Our
Cadet Captain Fakruddin Nasir attended the Sea Training Camp held at Western Naval Command, Mumbai, in June 2007. The N. C.
C. Officer Sub/ Lt Purushotham K. V. and 5 Cadets of our college participated in the National Integration Camp held at Dehra
Doon in June 2007. Along with the regular NCC activities, our Unit conducted Trekking Expeditions and Blood Donation Camp.
We congratulate Prof. Purshotham K. V. for making our Naval Unit a feather in the cap of Pompei College.

N. S. S.:
Our N S S Unit, with 115 enthusiastic volunteers, has Dr Radhakrishna Bhat as the Programme Officer and Prof. Gunakar as Asst
Programme Officer. During the year under review, a Blood Donation Camp was conducted, the Independence Day was celebrated,
Swasthya Sankalpa and other programmes were held for the benefit of the members. During the week-end Camps, the playground
of Government Higher Primary School, Ullanje, was extended, and cleaning and environmental awareness programme was held at
Mennabettu-Kinnigoli as well as Sankalakariya. The Annual Special Camp of 10 days was held at ‘Providence Poor Students’
Hostel’ at Balakunje. The creation of a playground for the hostelites and the entertainment programmes for the public were
done so efficiently that the hosts and the public highly appreciated the Camp. Besides, our members constantly attend camps
and programmes conducted by other colleges too. We congratulate Dr Radhakrishna Bhat and Prof. Gunakar for their excellent
guidance and all the volunteers for their responsible leadership, sensitivity to the needs of the poor and selfless service.
HUMANITIES ASSOCIATION:
With Prof. Yogindra B. as the Covnenor and all the members of the Arts Faculty as members, the Association was inaugurated on
9.8.2007. Veena Vas, I B. A., Vishwith, II B. A. and Joel Mathew Sequeira, III B. A. were the Student-Leaders. A guest-
lecture on Preservation of ancient monuments and folklore by Sri Thukaram Poojary, S V S College, Bantwal, was conducted.
Essay Competitions in English as well as Kannada were conducted for the members and the prizes distributed.
COMMERCE AND MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION:
The Association, under the guidance of Dr Haribert Nazareth, was inaugurated on 29.7.2007 by Prof. Ramesh Kulai of Govinda
Dasa College, Suratkal, who delivered a lecture on the Relevance of Commerce Education in the present era.
In collaboration with the Career Guidance Cell of the college, the Association conducted awareness programmes for II and III
Year B. Com. students on the professional courses available to them after graduation.
CULTURAL ASSOCIATION:
The Cultural Association of the college functions efficiently under the direction of Prof. Yogindra B. and Student Leader,
Akshatha Shenoy, III B. A. The Association not only presented quality items on the Pompei Day, Founder’s Day, etc. but also
strives to bring out the latent histrionic talents from the students.
CAREER GUIDANCE CELL:
The Career Guidance Cell of the college, under the efficient guidance of Prof. Gunakar organized an awareness programme on M.
B. A. for the students of
II Year B. Com. A workshop on Computer Accounting was held for the Final Year B. Com. students with the assistance of
Institute of Computer Accountants, Udupi.
34 students are undergoing the course on Industrial Accountant in the college. The students were also provided campus
recruitment. We are happy to announce to you that the J P Morgan Ltd, Genpact and other MNCs are eager to have campus
selection in Pompei College.
RED CROSS AND AIDS AWARENESS UNITS:
Both the Units were directed by Prof. Yogindra B. and functioned efficiently during the year.
P T A AND ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS:
The batons of the P T A and Alumni Associations were passed from Mr Ramesh Shetty to Mr Ratnakar Shetty and from Mr Santhan
D’Souza to Mr Rocky G. Lobo respectively as Presidents. Both Associations presented 100 chairs each to the college and helped
furnish the Providence Hall with elegant Chairs. 200 more chairs were donated by the Staff and students. We remain grateful
to the Office Bearers and Members of both the PTA and Alumni Associations for their keen interest in the institution and for
the generous assistance in various ways.
A I C U F:
In memory of the Silver Jubilee of the college, the AICUF UNIT was inaugurated in the college on 9.7.2007 by Rev. Fr Sunil
Menezes. Under the direction of Prof. Patrick Menezes and Ms Jyothi B. R. Kamath, all the Christian students of the
college are members of the Unit. This All India Christian University Federation is led by Wesly D’Souza, Sr Flaveena
Fernandes, Lawrence Lobo and Neelesh Pinto. The members get together regularly for prayer and celebration of Holy Mass. The
Annual Retreat to the members was preached by Rev. Fr Eugene D’Silva, CSSR and Rev. Fr Henry Fernandes, CSSR. The members
constructed a beautiful Crib on the occasion of Christmas and conducted a Gospel Quiz Competition. Reaching out to the poor
and the needy and conducting various developmental programmes are on its programme for the year. While thanking the
Directors, I wish all the best to the AICUF in its mission of prayer and service.
PRJANA, THE WALL MAGAZINE:
The Wall Magazine has come alive with renewed vigour under the efficient direction of Prof. Nemichandra Gowda M. Weekly
publication of the creative art- works of each Class has attracted the attention of the Staff and Students alike. Vasu, III
B. Com., Akashata Shenoy, III B. A., Pradeep, II B. Com., Dinesh Shetty, II B. A., Peter Cutinho, I B. Com., Levin Castelino,
I B. A. and Jeevan Crasta,
I B B M are the Student Editors. The Journalists’ Association of Mulky conducted a seminar on Journalism Ttoday with Mr
Krishna Bhat, Sub Editor, Vijayakarnataka as the resource person on 27.8.2007. The first volume of PRAJNA was released
solemnly by Dr M. Mohan Alva, our Chief Guest of the day. Our congratulations to Prof. Nemichandra Gowda and the student
editors for bringing out the best of art works from the students and for making the Wall Magazine informative, educative,
entertaining and creative.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:
1. The medical check up and the health care of our Students as well as our Staff have been looked after carefully by
Concetta Hospital, Kinnigoli. We remain grateful to Dr Sr Lelian and her team of medical personnel for their generous medical
service.
2. Prof. Govinda Bhat, H. O. D. of Hindi, procured 30 scholarships for the needy students of the neighbouring High
Schools and P U Cs from the Dhriti Foundation and Infosys. Our hearty congratulations to him for his sensitivity to the
needs of the poor and needy students of our neighbourhood.
3. Various Scholarships have been obtained for the deserving students:

2) Post-matric Scholarships for Backward Communities and Minorities for 2006 -07 for 22 students: Rs 6,600/=

8) J. B. Pinto Memorial Scholarship for 25 students for 2006-07: Rs16,500/=

The college remains grateful to all the Donor Agencies for their benevolence towards our needy students.
CONCLUSION:
I am happy to present to you these dynamic life and activities of Pompei College during the current academic year. The Lord
has blessed us abundantly through the intercession of our Pompei Mother. While recalling the providence which has brought
Pompei to a significant point of glory, we express our profound gratitude to our management of Catholic Board of Education,
represented locally by our beloved Correspondent, all our dedicated Staff Members- teaching as well as non-teaching, our
loving students, the parents of our students, our former senior students, our neighbouring educational institutions, the
public and well-wishers of Pompei. A special word of thanks is due to Mr Rocky G. Lobo for efficient Office-maintenance and
obtaining permission for BBM. May the glorious flag of Pompei fly high in the sky. May the college grow to newer heights of
academic and co-curricular excellence. May all who come into Pompei College go out to a brilliant future with smiles on
their faces and social responsibility on their shoulders.
