POMPEI COLLEGE AIKALA
SILVER JUBILEE REPORT
25 FEBRUARY 2006
Your Excellency the Bishop of Mangalore, esteemed Dignitaries on the dais,
Rev. Fathers, Rev. Sisters, respected Guests, Parents, Well-wishers of the college, members of the Staff, my dear past and present Students,
On this Silver Jubilee Day, I am happy to present a brief report of the growth of Pompei College during the past quarter of a century. Founded on 6th July 1981 by the heroic
Founder, the late Rev. Fr Bernard L. D'Souza, the college has grown in quality and quantity over the years.
HOMAGE
Our revered Founder initiated the Jubilee Year on 6th July 2005. Just three weeks ago, on 4.2.2006, the Lord took him to his eternal reward. While we gratefully record his
heroic adventure in bringing higher education to the doorstep of the rural students of Aikala and the neighbourhood in view of offering them a bright future, we pray to the good
Lord that He may reward him with heavenly bliss. We also record, with deep gratitude, the dedicated services rendered by the late Prof. P. Sridhar Rao and the late Prof.
Valerian D'Mello, the Principals who succeeded the Founder-Principal, Fr Bernard, and pray for their eternal rest.
ADMINISTRATION

INFRA-STRUCTURE& FACILITIES
The college is blessed with an 8 acre plot with spacious and well-ventilated Class Rooms, two Playgrounds for Sports and Games, two Gymnasia for boys and girls, a
conducive atmosphere for study, a well-equipped Library with 12,301 books costing Rs 7,15,000/=, a Computerized Office, an Open Air Stage and Providence Hall for cultural
presentations, a Museum with a Herbarium, Coin Phone, Photocopier and, clean and cool Drinking Water facility. To these have been added the Audio-Visual Hall, the
Conference Hall and Fr Bernard Memorial Indoor Stadium today. An Entrance Gate, Ashoka Pillar and renovated Offices were installed with the cooperation of our
Parent-Teacher and Alumni Associations.
SILVER JUBILEE PROJECTS
Our Silver Jubilee Projects are meant not just to be memorials, but are aimed at meeting the felt needs of our students. Besides constructing an Audio-Visual Hall and a
Conference Hall with the assistance of the UGC, an Indoor Stadium was dedicated to our Founder today.
The college hosted 2 University Level Inter-Collegiate Events during the Silver Jubilee Year : The Volley Ball Tournament for Men and Skit Competition on Aids–awareness,
both of which were enthusiastically participated by representatives of various colleges. A State Level Seminar on ‘The Facets of Information Technology and the Knowledge
Sharing Process' was organized on 21.12.2005 for the Staff, which attracted as many as 91 Economists from all over the State.
ACADEMIC INNOVATIONS
In addition to the regular B. A. and B. Com. courses, we found it necessary to give Computer Education to our students to make them employable after graduation. Hence,
the Computer Centre of the college, started on 1.8.2003, offers 3 Certificate Courses at a nominal fee of Rs 1,000/= each. An English Speaking Course has been offered to
the Final Year students during the past two years for effective communication. We have also offered a Basic Accountancy Course with the help of a Guest Lecturer, Mrs
Gretta D'Souza, to the Final Year B. A. students. After each Examination, Internal Rank Lists of the first 10 Rank-holders of each Class are being published and the first three
granted the J. B. Pinto Memorial Scholarships. While the advanced learners are thus encouraged, the slow learners are being given special attention by the Staff to come up
to the expected standards.
Value Education is being imparted weekly. Annual Medical Check Up is conducted by Concetta Hospital, Kinnigoly. The celebration of Pompei Day in October provides ample
opportunities for the presentation of the histrionic talents of the students. Every effort has been made to give personal attention to them. The poor and needy students have
been provided with Free Midday Meals since 1.7.2004. 112 out 400 and 139 out of 409 students have been granted this facility during the past two successive years. The
Free Midday Meal Scheme is being implemented purely through voluntary donations from persons of goodwill, to all of whom we express our profound gratitude on behalf of
the beneficiaries and their parents.
STUDENTS' WELFARE COUNCIL
The Students' Welfare Council, directed by a Staff Guide, has been functioning efficiently over the past years in the college. The Council comprises 12 elected
Representatives of the 6 Classes. All of them have cooperated admirably in the planning and implementation of the various programmes in the college.
CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS
Various Clubs and Associations function in the college under the guidance of the Staff Directors. While the NCC Naval Wing and NSS are feathers in the cap of the college,
the Humanities Association, Commerce Association, Cultural Association, Music Club, Debating Club, Women's Cell, Career Guidance Cell, Wall Magazine 'Prajna' and the
