HISTORY
Our College is called "Pompei College" because it has been deicated to "Our Lady of Pompei". Pompei was a town in Italy near Naples which was first occupied by the Oscans who were the descendents of the Neolithic inhabitants of Campania. It was a Roman colony and was partly destroyed by an earthquake in 63 A.D. In 79 A.D., the city of Pompei was completely destroyed by a violent volcanic eruption from mount Vesuvius, which buried the town under a rain of ashes and mud. This history of Pompei is now known to us by the occasional finds of antiquities from Pompei which are recorded in the Renaissance. The beginning of the devotion of the Rosary can be traced back to 1571. When this devotion spread far and wide, it reached our land in India and the statues of our lady can be seen in our Church also. In Kirem all the educational institutions were dedicated to our Lady of Pompei are named after her. Pompei Higher Primary School, Pompei High School, Pompei Pre-University College and Pompei First Grade College where thousands of our students acquire knowledge under the patronage and maternal protection of our Lady of Pompei.

ORIGIN
The Pompei High School in Aikala saw the light of the day through relentless labour of Late Rev Fr George Menezes in 1945. Rev Fr B.A. D'Souza carried the institution to greater heights of excellence under his dynamic leadership. The enterprising and efficient Rev Fr Aloysius Alvares was instrumental in transforming the High School into the Pompei Pre University College in 1972. The creation of a temple of higher learning in the form of a first grade college was a greater dream of many educationists of Aikala, more difficult to be realized. However Rev Fr Bernard L. D'Souza, ventured to fulfill this educational nedd of the student community of the locality. Approved by Rt Rev Dr Basil S D' Souza, then Bishop of Mangalore, the Pompei College was inaugurated in 1981. After obtaining necessary permission from the Government and affiliation to Mangalore University, the problem of the appropriate location for the College building was tackled systematically, an extensive area of 13 acres of land was acquired from 20 tenants. The foundation stone for the new College building was laid on 20th September 1981. Within a short period, that by 20th September 1982, the majestic edifice of the College building, in its present form (except the library building) was completed. Rev Fr Bernard L D'Souza was instrumental in co-ordinating and completing this prestigious project within a shortest time. So many people from Kinnigoli and Kirem parish have offered help both monetarily and non-monetarily (i.e. with free labour during construction, digging of the well etc). One of the college staff has even sacrificed his life during its construction.

Pompei College is a religious and linguistic Minority Institution founded in 1981 by Rev. Fr. Bernard L. D' Souza in order to provide education primarily to the youth of this area. It also fulfills the aspirations of higher education of the locality adding to the cultural content of the society by imparting academic and value education to students of all castes and creeds without distinction. The Catholic Board of Education, Mangalore, manages the college. The college is affiliated to the Mangalore University.

The seed sown by Rev Fr George Menezes in 1945, has grown into a beautiful plant, nay a great tree with the pioneering efforts of the founder Rev Fr Bernard L D'Souza. More than 400 young boys and girls are finding a "home away from home" in Pompei College today under the guidance of Rev Fr Valerian Mendonca, the Principal and 12+5 members of the teaching staff and 12 members of the non-teaching staff. The College provides both Arts and Commerce streams for the students.
