PRINCIPAL
COLLEGE EDUCATION : POINTS TO BE REMEMBERED
Aim of every student should be the development of mind, the gathering of information in the different subjects of study, digesting this information and putting it into a practical framework. The aim of study should not be just to successfully reproduce what is learnt in an examination, but to cultivate the art of thinking analytically and critically and expressing clearly.

To attain this goal every student shall put sincere effort in studies and fullest possible involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Normally the college academic year starts in June and ends with final exams in April of the following year. There will be a month’s mid term vacation in October-November.

CURRICULAR STUDIES :
1. Students should have a well planned and a neat personal time table for day to day study. A student has to study at least 2 to 3 hours on every working day and at least 4 to 5 hours on holidays. A study minded student will complete his/ her day to day home work sincerely without copying from others. In the college he/ she will spend his / her free time in the library reading reference books, journals and preparing notes.
2. The students are expected to maintain a diary in which he/ she shall record the following :
a) Date wise syllabus / topics dealt in the class by the concerned lecturers.
b) Reference books suggested by the lecturers.
c) Date wise record of library books /journals referred.
This record will help the students to fill up the different proforma and annexures to be filled and submitted to the lecturers once in a week.
3. The students should be attentive in the classroom. For clarification of any doubt, they may contact the lecturers concerned during the free time.
4. Regular study habit is very essential to achieve the best, such students will not have fear of the examinations. And they will not have mental tension and load during the examination days.


EXTRA AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES :

The Students’ Welfare Council of the College shall be directed by the Students’ Welfare Officer and constituted by a male and a female Representative of each class. It shall assist the Staff in organizing the extra-curricular activities of the college.

Extra-curricular activities such as N.S.S., N.C.C., Sports & Games, Cultural and Value Education activities, Literary Programmes, Guest Lecturers, Talents Competitions etc., will develop the total development of the students body and mind. The College expects every student to involve in one or the other extra and co-curricular activity.

COLLEGE LIBRARY :



The College library has more than 10,938 books (started with 93 books in 1981-82) costing over Rs 5,70,000 (as on January 2004) and a spacious reading room with sufficient journals. The Library is kept open from 0900 hours till 1700 hours on all working days. Students are issued with Identity cards which they have to produced at the counter while entering the library. They have to register their names and roll numbers in the register kept at the entrance of Library /reading room. Students can borrow a book from library for a maximum of two weeks.

SPORTS AND GAMES :


Students are grouped into four houses namely White, Blue, Red and Green. Leaders ate selected form both men and women sections from all the groups. The College is having two spacious playgrounds, one in the front and the other at the back of the college premises. It has a good collection of sports materials. Volley ball, weight lifting, power lifting, athletics, table tennis , chess, kabaddi, cricket, badminton etc are some of the sports/games events available for students. It also has an up to date Gymnasium. The students are required to make the best use of these facilities.

1. To encourage sportsmanship, inter-class competitions are held from time to time. All students are stimulated to participate in the competitions.
2. The games secretary is nominated by the Principal. The games secretary is responsible to collect and return the games materials.
3. The students may collect games materials through the games secretary. 4. College teams willing to participate in tournaments and sports meets should put in regular and systematic practice. The Principal may allow the teams to participate in the tournaments considering the teams practice, capacity and general behaviour of the members of the team. Students are not allowed to play in any team against the College Team.


N.C.C. :
The College is having a Naval N.C.C. unit with an intake capacity of 50 candidates. Lady students may also join this unit. While selecting the candidates general health, personality and attitude will be considered. Regular coaching will be held on Saturday afternoon. N.C.C. Certificates may help the students for getting admission to higher course or obtaining job. Each year 50 cadets are trained in drill, boat pulling, sailing, ship modeling, semaphore etc which are routine activities. Girls are also enrolling in NCC unit. Cadets actively participatein various activities like blood donation, trekking, cycle expeditions, independence day/ republic day parades, tree planting, vigilance awareness programmes, AIDs awareness programmes etc. They also attend camps like National Integration, Nav Sainik camps, Pre-republic day camps, Republic day camp, All India Trekking Expeditions etc. Not to forget that each year at least one cadet brings glory to the college by participating in prestigious National level Republic day camp held at New Delhi, marching on Rajpath, which is a great honour both to the cadet and to the college.

N.S.S.:
N.S.S. unit of Mangalore University has the intake capacity of 100 students.
Students of I and II Degree classes may register their names with the officer concerned in the beginning of the academic year. N.S.S. unit will organize week end half day camps, one day camp inside the college and its surroundings. 10 days special camp will be organized during mid-term vacation. Apart from its usual service activities like blood donation, water conservation, vanamahotsava, Malaria Awareness, AIDS awareness programmes etc., it also arranges guest lecturers leadership and awareness programmes, personality development programmes and debates on different relevant topics.


CULTURAL ASSOCIATION / LITERARY COMMITTEE :
Cultural Association is a forum where students dance, sing and act and bring out their hidden talents.This forum provides an opportunity to the students to be away from academic boredom and get themselves involved in cultural activities like singing, dance, drama, skits, mono acts, pick & act, pick & speak and likewise. Cultural Committee will organize and train the students to produce quality entertainment programme. It will arrange interclass talents competition. It deputes the best talented students/teams to intercollegiate competitions. Literary Committee trains and guides the interested students to write articles which may be published in the “Prajna” wall magazine and College magazine. The association has a long way to go, its path is never ending since talents have no end. It is moving in right direction to search for new talents and for it only sky is the limit.

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER EDUCATION :


Computer education is very much felt need of the generation. Computer education was the dream of present Principal, Rev Fr Valerian Mendonca. Under his initiative and guidance, a self-financed computer course was started to cater to the needs of the students. Parents also have realized the importance of the same. This led to the establishment of “Pompei Computer Centre” on 1st August 2003. Nearly 90 students are undergoing training. Nearly ten computers are at work. Accounting packages like Tally Solutions alongwith other MS Office courses are taught to the students. Certificates are issued to students at end of academic year.

STUDY TOURS AND RESEARCH PROGRAMMES :

The lecturers may arrange educational tours to historical, cultural or industrial areas. By attending these tours the students will have a practical knowledge of the subjects taught in the class rooms. Strict discipline and serious involvement is expected of the students in these tours.

CAREER GUIDANCE CELL :

It is headed by Prof Herald D’ Souza. It caters to the needs of students, as to know the future prospects and job opportunities in job markets and self employment opportunities. Necessary information and guidance is made available to students through well known personalities, qualified guests /experts. The cell has conducted several useful programmes for the betterment of the students. Well-known personalities who have succeeded in various fields shared their unique experiences with the students. The Officers deputed from the Banks gave necessary information about loan facilities to various self-employment schemes. Also lectures on employment opportunities after graduation, competitive examinations and avenues available and how to face interviews etc was also arranged. Care is also taken to provide full fledged information whenever a student has approached for consultations. This Cell expects to serve the student community better in the future as well.

STUDENTS COUNCIL :

It functions efficiently under Prof Herbert Nazareth and 12 elected student representatives. The significant activities of this Council during the year were
1. Mobilisation of funds for the construction of the flag post and the Open Air Stage
2. Organisation of Pompei Day and College Day Celebrations
3. Maintenance of discipline in the Classes and the Campus
4. Campus cleaning
PARENT -TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA) :
PTA came into formal functioning from the academic year 2002-2003. A need was felt to associate the parents of the students with the College, so that parents will know the real picture of the college and their wards in the college.

PTA came into existence with inauguration on 23.12.2002. PTA is taking very keen interest in the developmental activities of the college. President of PTA is giving full co-operation and whole-hearted support to the betterment of the institution.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION :

Alumni Association of Pompei College was formed on 02.02.2003. It was inaugurated by the founder of the college Rev Fr Bernard L D’Souza on 16.03.2003. It aims at providing monetary help to the needy students, to create and maintain rapport and love for the ‘Alma Matha’ to help the college to maintain discipline in the time of necessity. It aims at promoting fellowship among its members and outsiders. It is trying to function as a ‘backbone’ of Pompei College.

MUSIC CLUB, NATURE CLUB, WOMEN’S CELL, DEBATING CLUB, HUMANITIES ASSOCIATION, GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL CELL, CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE, PROVIDENCE MAGAZINE COMMITTEE, COLLEGE CALENDAR & PROSPECTUS COMMITTEE, INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE CELL , DISCIPLINE COMMITTEE are some of the Committees /Associations that are associated within the college and function very efficiently and actively.
